OLS – Lesson 4: Training Guidelines

    LESSON 4 - Training Guidelines

In order for your ARISE groups to run smoothly, it is important to set ground rules. The organization, school, or facility you are working with may have their own guidelines that you must follow. Take these into consideration when you are developing your rules.

Youth are more likely to follow the guidelines when they take an active part in creating them. Ask them what rules they feel would be fair for all of them to follow.

Frame rules in positive terms; try to avoid using “no.” Some examples are:

    • Respect other people’s opinions.

    • Raise your hand when you want to speak.

    • Share only positive comments during discussions (for example, avoid bragging about drug use).

    • Be quiet when other people are speaking.

An important expectation for you as a facilitator is to encourage all youth to participate.
