    WHY?

    1

Ask a volunteer to share his answer or worksheet, and then have him select the next person. Continue this process until all have participated.

    2

Keep an envelope of numbers in your class. Assign each learner a number, and then draw one out of the envelope. The learner whose number corresponds to the one drawn is expected to share.

    2

    3

Ask a very simple question (e.g., What is your dream car?), and go around the room at a fast pace to hear their answers. The quick pace and simplicity of the question won't really give them an opportunity to refuse to respond.

    3

    4

If the learners are in rows or at separate tables, ask for five or six answers from each row table. This will encourage some of the quieter ones to contribute.

    4

    5

    Take a poll.

    6

Assign learners to work in small groups, and …

    • then select a spokesperson for the group. Choose a learner that you know will not mind being called on.

    • when it's time to share, ask a quieter student, “Jason, what did your group come up
      with?”

    • make it a contest to see which group can come up with the most answers/ responses.

    6

    7

Whenever there is information to read in the workbook, encourage a learner to read it out loud for the class. They need the practice and it gets them involved.

    7

    8

If a learner says a particular activity or lesson is boring or that he already knows the material, encourage him to be your teaching assistant for the session. This way he can develop other skills, such as leadership.
